Alexandros Washburn MArch ’88 Proposed Redevelopment of Penn Station
Alexandros Washburn MArch ’88 is the Executive Director of Grand Penn Community Alliance, a nonprofit advocacy group that proposed a reimagined Penn Station to the New York Historical Society in March 2025. The plan features the relocation of Madison Square Garden and the addition of a sprawling green space similar in size to Bryant Park. The former Chief Urban Designer for New York City, Washburn has been involved in complex redevelopment projects throughout his career, including the Moynihan Train Hall across the street from Penn Station.
“The classical architecture remains civic, uplifting and above all, public. That was a lesson from my mentor Senator Moynihan who used to shine shoes as an impoverished urchin in the classical halls of the original Penn Station. He could be shining the shoes of a millionaire. But in that classical, civic space they were equal as citizens. Grand Penn will be uplifting to all,” shared Washburn.
