Christoph Pichler MArch’92 Firm Awarded 2023 Austrian State Prize for Architecture
Pichler & Traupmann Architekten, an architectural firm lead by Christoph Pichler MArch’92, was awarded the Austrian State Prize for Architecture 2023 in the category Administration/Research for the Future Art Lab of the University of Music and Performing Arts Vienna project. Every two years, the Federal Ministry of Labor and Economic Affairs awards the State Prize for Architecture for outstanding architectural achievements based on the decision of an independent jury of experts. Since 1992, Christoph has been running the Vienna based architectural office Pichler & Traupmann Architekten together with Hannes Traupmann and since then they have worked together on a wide range of building projects of various typologies. In the meantime, the office has gained another four partners.

Jane Wolff MLA ’92 Selected as 2022 Winner of Margolese Prize
Jane Wolff MLA ’92 was a 2022 recipient one of Canada’s most prestigious design awards, the Margolese Design for Living Prize — a $50,000 prize awarded to a Canadian designer whose work addresses the future of the built environment.
Wolff, a landscape designer and scholar, was awarded the Margolese Prize by an esteemed peer jury for her work in “landscape literacy”. She uses public engagement, drawing and creative writing to form a common platform or language that disparate stakeholders can use to better understand complex and fragile landscapes. By sharing meaningful stories about a site’s past and present circumstances, Wolff helps communities to address its future.
The Margolese Prize was celebrated with a public presentation and panel discussion at the Robert H. Lee Alumni Centre on UBC campus in Vancouver on October 3, 2022, at 6 pm.

Mikyoung Kim, MLA ’92 Named 2022 Landscape Architecture Firm Award Recipient from ASLA
Mikyoung Kim Design, the firm of Mikyoung Kim, MLA ’92 has been recently awarded the Firm of the Year Award, the highest honor that the ASLA bestows on a landscape architecture firm. This award is given to firms that have generated bodies of significant work impacting the professional practice of landscape architecture.
“We are thrilled that our studio’s work with communities across the globe has been recognized by the ASLA. We are so honored to receive this capstone award. For twenty five years we have been focused on transformational urban design at the intersection between human health, social justice and environmental resiliency,” says Mikyoung Kim.
Mikyoung Kim Design is focused on bringing health and wellbeing to our resilient landscapes. During this pandemic, their team has been working with the Ford Motor Company on a 14-acre park in Detroit at Michigan Central, a 47 acre park in downtown Houston for the Texas Medical Center and we just finished our first LGBTQ friendly seniors housing campus in Boston to create more inclusive parks in some of America’s most diverse cities. The firm has used the scientific research behind brain and physiological functions of the body to develop a series of healing gardens in hospitals in Chicago, Boston and Miami. That research is now being transferred to all of the firm’s projects during this pandemic from universities to tech centers and public parks.

Anthony Poon, MArch ’92 has authored his third book, Death by Design at Alcatraz, published by Goff Books. This novel examines the architect’s ego, arrogance, and redemption within the design process. In Memoriam: Christopher Procter MAUD ’92
Christopher Procter MAUD ’92 passed away on November 18th, 2018. He is survived by Bridget and his two sons, Lucien and Sebastien. Christopher’s wife, Bridget Smyth MDes ’93, is the Design Director of Sydney and a former member of the Alumni Council. Christopher Procter graduated from the GSD to then study at the University of South Australia’s Bachelor of Architecture degree, before going on to practice in Sydney, Boston, Oman, Christchurch, Melbourne, and Adelaide.
“The study of architecture opened Christopher’s eyes to expressive possibilities. Many were envious of the fluidity and ease his project work exuded. Architecture proved the perfect fit for him. It provided sustenance for his intellectual and creative appetites and allowed him to exercise them in a realm that he negotiated with great ease – that of fellowship with other beings. Mikyoung Kim MLA ’92 Receives 2018 ASLA Design Medal
Mikyoung Kim MLA ’92 is the recipient of this year’s Design Medal from the American Society of Landscape Architects (ASLA), one of the most prestigious honors bestowed upon a landscape architect. The Medal recognizes an individual “who has produced a body of exceptional design work at a sustained level for at least ten years,” according to its website.
“It is a tremendous honor to be recognized and supported by my peers and clients. This recognition is an amazing moment for me because it not only honors the work of my office, but also highlights the importance of resiliency, restoration, and creative thinking,” Kim said in a press release.
She is founding principal and design director of Mikyoung Kim Design, an international, woman-owned, landscape architecture and urban design firm based in Boston. The studio’s award-winning body of work addresses the most pressing environmental and health-related issues, while creating artful and immersive experiences. Earlier this year, the firm received the National Design Award from Cooper Hewitt, Smithsonian Design Museum.
In Kim’s nomination materials, author and thought leader Sarah Goldhagen remarked: “Mikyoung shows that landscape design and environmental art can be a public amenity, a social condenser, and a sustainable practice while simultaneously being a poetic art that captures and sustains our all-too-often-distracted attention, confers a graceful sense of play, and instigates deep imaginative thought about the many ways that every day landscapes can enrich peoples individual experience and social congress.” (View all of Kim’s supporting nominations.)
Kim currently serves as a Design Critic in Landscape Architecture at the GSD. She led the fall 2017 option studio “Civic Spaces in an Age of Hyper-Complexity: From Protest to Reverie” with Bryan Chou, Design Leader at Mikyoung Kim Design.

Firm of Mikyoung Kim MLA ’92 Wins 2018 Cooper Hewitt National Design Award
Mikyoung Kim Design, the firm of Mikyoung Kim MLA ’92, is this year’s recipient of the Cooper Hewitt National Design Award for Landscape Architecture. The awards celebrate “design as a vital humanistic tool in shaping the world, and seeks to increase national awareness of design by educating the public and promoting excellence, innovation, and lasting achievement,” according to their website. Mikyoung Kim Design is an international landscape architecture and urban design firm based in Boston. Projects include the Chongae River Restoration, Crown Sky Garden, and Prudential Plaza.
“We’re so honored to receive this recognition from Cooper Hewitt this year. It’s really exciting to be acknowledged for doing the kind of unique work that we love. This award is the ultimate reflection of the creative spirit and dedication of our team, who are some of the most talented designers I’ve had the pleasure with which to collaborate,” said Kim in the firm’s press release.

Alumni Projects Receive 2018 MASterworks Awards
Projects by three alumni have been honored with 2018 MASterworks Awards from the The Municipal Art Society of New York. The awards celebrate designs that make a significant contribution to the built environment of New York City. DLANDstudio, the firm founded by Susannah Drake MArch ’95, MLA ’95, won “Best Urban Landscape” for the project Gowanus Canal Sponge Park; ARO, the firm of Stephen Cassell MArch ’92, won “Best New Building” for their Brooklyn Bridge Park Boathouse; and WORKac, the firm of Amale Andraos MArch ’99, won “Best New Urban Amenity” for the Kew Gardens Hills Library project. Recipients will be honored at an event on April 11 that will also toast to MAS’s 125th Anniversary.
