When was the last time a city attempted to build a downtown, not as a “project” but as a place? A place that is designed to grow organically, incrementally over time, and that becomes the center of public life? Join three GSD alumni as they walk through how they have shaped the vision and public realm for Downtown Westminster. Sarah Nurmela MUP ’04, Real Estate and Development Manager for Downtown Westminster, will tour visitors and offer an in-depth look at how the City of Westminster has embarked upon a redevelopment paradigm that challenges the norms of today’s real estate market.

Greg Dorolek MLA ’02 and Megan Shiotani MLA ’15 of Wenk Associates have been instrumental in the design of Downtown Westminster’s public realm, creating the Streetscape Master Plan and designing the Central Square. Greg and Megan will tour visitors around the newly-constructed Central Square that features a distinctive pavilion, a granite fountain, a flexible grass knoll, a wooden stage deck, a beer garden and integrated café seating.

After the approximately one-hour tour, the group will gather at Kokopelli Beer Company across from the Downtown at 8931 Harlan Street.
