George Ranalli MArch ’74 Featured in Publication for Theater Project
Anne Valentino and George Ranalli MArch ’74 of George Ranalli Architect are featured in: Architecture Here and There by David Brussat. The publication includes photography and aims to “promote a revival of classical and traditional architecture in Providence, R.I., and around the world by suggesting that lovable buildings needn’t be old but can be made new today, if only modern architecture can be somehow convinced, or shamed, or forced, into permitting an even playing field for major commissions in architecture.”
Through an integration of mechanical, structural, and material conditions, Ranalli introduced a modern design for a new theater, harmonious to both street and district in the municipality of a historic Pennsylvania district. The project called for a proposal for a new 4,000 square ft. non-profit community theater featuring a masonry façade attuned to its setting.

George Ranalli MArch ’74 Featured on FOX 5 News, Apartment Therapy
George Ranalli MArch ’74 was recently featured on a FOX 5 News, New York, segment about photographer Michael Fiedler’s new book Working Journal: A photographic and hand-written chronicle. Ranalli, founder of George Ranalli Architect in New York, is one of Fiedler’s subjects in the publication, which combines portraits of professionals from a range of backgrounds accompanied by their hand-written notes. Additionally, a remodeling project by Ranalli is the subject of the Apartment Therapy article: “This Psychology-Focused Renovation is Full of Smart Layout Changes and Clever Storage Hacks.” “Psychology played a big role in project readiness in particular for this before and after,” said psychologist Anne Valentino Ph.D., who has worked with Ranalli on understanding the relationship between our physical environment and our mental wellbeing for more than 30 years.

George Ranalli MArch ’74 Featured in “Working Journal,” Times Tower Project Receives International Press
Anne Valentino and George Ranalli MArch ’74 of George Ranalli Architect are featured in: Working Journal: A photographic and hand-written chronicle by Michael Fiedler. The publication includes photography and notes documenting the “work, professions, and endeavors that shape our connections to people and the world around us.”
In addition, Ranalli’s 1984 Times Tower project has received international press over the last few months, appearing in Lonely Planet, the New York Post, The Guardian, Fox News, the Daily Mail, and Cerodosbe. Ranalli’s vision for New York City’s Times Square proposes a totem-style tower that would house theaters on each level.

Eleven Alumni Elevated to AIA College of Fellows 2018
Eleven GSD alumni have been elevated by the 2018 Jury of Fellows from the American Institute of Architects (AIA) to its prestigious College of Fellows. The honor recognizes architects who have “achieved a standard of excellence in the profession and made a significant contribution to architecture and society on a national level.” A ceremony honoring the new fellows will take place on June 22 at the AIA Conference on Architecture 2018 in New York City.

Ellen McCarthy MCP ’74 Appointed Director of the DC Office of Planning
Ellen McCarthy MCP ’74 was appointed by Washington DC Mayor Vincent C. Gray to serve as director of the DC Office of Planning. McCarthy, who is also a lecturer in Georgetown University’s Masters in Professional Studies Program in Urban and Regional Planning, brings more than 40 years of experience to the position. She begins her role on April 14, 2014.

John Shields MArch, MAUD ’74, Mark Favermann MCRP ’78, Anthony Pangaro MArch ’69, LF ’76 and Peter Vanderwarker LF ’97, were part of a team honored with a Clearwater Award for their work on Esplanade 2020 A Vision for the Future. Comprised of leading Boston design and planning specialists, the volunteer group was charged with taking a fresh look at every element of the Esplanade and spent more than a year crafting a vision of what the park could become. Presented by the Waterfront Center, the Clearwater Award recognizes grass-roots and volunteer work by individuals or groups for the betterment of their community and its waterfront. The team accepted their award at the center’s annual conference, which took place in Davenport, Iowa on Sept. 25-28, 2013.
