Bernardo Fort-Brescia, FAIA MArch ’75 Receives Prestigious Award from The Chicago Athenaeum and The European Centre for Architecture Art Design and Urban Studies
The Chicago Athenaeum and The European Centre for Architecture Art Design and Urban Studies have bestowed Bernardo Fort-Brescia, FAIA MArch ’75 and Laurinda Spear with the 2019 American Prize for Architecture, also known as The Louis H. Sullivan Award. The honor is given to an outstanding office and/or practitioner in the United States that has created a new direction in architectural design and has demonstrated consistent contributions to the built environment. Rarely does one have such an impact on the appearance of a city quite the way Arquitectonica has with the Magic City skyline. With more than 40 years of designing buildings that dot Miami’s waterfront and urban core, Bernardo Fort-Brescia and Laurinda Spear were recognized for their contribution to shaping the built environment of the city as well as cities around the world.
The firm’s designs have defined modern Miami, and their celebrated projects in cities around the world include skyscrapers, opera houses, resorts and new cities. Bernardo Fort-Brescia led the charge of expanding the firm across the country and abroad. The firm is known as one of the pioneers of globalization in the architecture profession. Arquitectonica now has projects in 58 countries around the world with offices in Miami, New York and Los Angeles, Europe, Southeast Asia and South America.

Jan Reizenstein Carpman MCP ’75, PhD has been appointed the first Director of Wayfinding at the Institute for Human Centered Design, Boston (IHCD). She relocated from Ann Arbor, MI, where she was a partner in Carpman Grant Associates, Wayfinding Consultants, for over 30 years. IHCD is an international nonprofit organization committed to advancing the role of design in expanding opportunity and enhancing the experience for people of all ages and abilities through excellence in design.

Alumni Bring Solar Power to Puerto Rico; Featured in Architectural Record, Miami Herald
A team of GSD alumni are involved in Resilient Power Puerto Rico, a project launched after Hurricane Maria to bring solar generators to the most under-served areas of the island with the long-term goal of promoting solar electric energy for every household in Puerto Rico. Jonathan Marvel MArch ’86 (Project Co-founder and Director of Logistics and Installation), Walter Meyer MLAUD ’03 (Project Co-founder and Strategy Director), Jennifer Bolstad AB ’98, MLA ’02 (Project Co-founder and Director of Administration and Finances), and José Juan Terrasa-Soler MLA ’07 (Director at Marvel Architects San Juan, Puerto Rico) are members of the Resilient Power Puerto Rico team, which operates under the nonprofit Coastal Marine Resource Center. Their work has been featured in a number of news outlets, including Architectural Record, the Miami Herald, AIA blog (interview with Marvel), the Architect’s Newspaper, and the Huffington Post.
In October, Terrasa-Soler participated in the GSD event “Hurricane Maria and Puerto Rico: Lessons for Future Urban Disasters,” moderated by Jerold S. Kayden AB ’75, JD ’79, MCRP ’79, Frank Backus Williams Professor of Urban Planning and Design, and organized by the Department of Urban Planning & Design, the MDes – Risk & Resilience concentration, and the course “Land Use and Environmental Law.”

Nelson Chen AB ’75, MArch ’78 Appointed Professor of Practice and Director of the School of Architecture at the Chinese University of Hong Kong
Nelson Chen AB ’75, MArch ’78 has been appointed professor of practice in architecture and director of the School of Architecture at the Chinese University of Hong Kong. He has practiced in Hong Kong since 1987 as principal architect of Nelson Chen Architects Ltd., an award-winning design firm. His design work was recently published in the monograph Nelson Chen Architects – Context and Community (Watermark Publications, UK).

Mark Francis MLAUD ’75 Receives Distinguished Alumni Award from UC, Berkeley
Mark Francis MLAUD ’75 received the 2014 Distinguished Alumni Award from the College of Environmental Design at the University of California, Berkeley for his “extraordinary contributions to the academy and profession of landscape architecture.” The award was presented at UC Berkeley’s Memorial Stadium on March 14, 2014.
