A Conversation on the Future of Housing in Providence

Providence has been quietly undergoing a metamorphosis. Affordable and sustainable communities have been challenged by rapidly increasing demand driven in part by Boston’s recent building boom. Changing demographic trends coupled with a contemporary shift in how people live and work indicate the need for a wider variety of housing options within the city, while a rich historic fabric has pitted preservationists against profit-driven development. The future of housing in this climate, which could be understood as a microcosm for small cities throughout the country, presents numerous challenges.

Join us for a discussion on the challenges and opportunities for housing that currently face the city of Providence. This conversation will include remarks by Alex Krieger, GSD Professor of Architecture and Urban Design and principal at NBBJ Architects, and Nic Retsinas, director emeritus of the Harvard Joint Center for Housing Studies.

This event is organized by Collette Creppell MArch ’90 in collaboration with Almin Pršić MArch ’10 and Cara Liberatore MArch ’12.

This event will be hosted by Pršić & Pršić, a firm co-lead by GSD alums Almin Pršić & Cara Liberatore, at their studio space located in East Providence’s industrial corridor. Once a mechanical pencil factory and later a storage facility, the 36,000 sf building has been recently converted into studio spaces for a diverse group of artists and designers. Several spaces will be accessible for self-guided tour throughout the evening.
