Why Ecological Urbanism? Why Now?

10:15-11:45am     Panel A: ANTICIPATE / ADAPT
As an emergent geography Latin America often faces extreme situations such as explosive growth, big migrations, natural disasters and drastic demographic changes among several other context variations.  The verbs adapt and anticipate refer in a way to a set of strategies that can help to build a more robust and adjustable urban fabric able to respond to variations in both, advance an afterwards. Issues of sustainable urban planning, urban politics, urban economics as well as design for resiliency or even discussions of futurism and obsolescence, converge under the umbrella of this panel.

12:00-1.30pm             Panel B: MEASURE/ MOBILIZE
With intensifying urbanization, the built form and socio-economic character of Latin American cities is in flux. New forms of social and spatial inequality fuel quotidian citizen demands for infrastructure and services, particularly as related to social and spatial mobility but also with respect to the wide array of environmental challenges, housing scarcities, and other social problems that frequently plague large metropolises. In light of these challenges, urban planning and design professionals are seeking alternative measurement tools and new forms of evidenced-based intervention to accommodate emergent citizen preferences while also guiding equitable and sustainable urban growth. Such aims require a good understanding of the underlying political and economic logics that drive urban development, even as they underscore the critical importance of the measure/mobilize nexus in confronting and transforming these logics.  Indeed, finding new ways of measuring and mobilizing the urban can help planning and design professionals guarantee citizen “rights to the city” while also increasing the likelihood that urban resources will be effectively distributed for the collective improvement of the city as a whole.

4:00-5.30pm       Panel C: CURATE / SENSE
If we are to design and plan the city in more ecological ways, embracing multiple ecologies, then we need to know the city better. It is in deeply understanding the ecologies of the urban that we can then design with these ecologies more effectively ways than is usually the case. One type of sensing might relate to new technologies utilized to understand the city in more nuanced ways, another to new methods of design and planning, meanwhile there are the human senses of touch and smell, as well as what we see. With a better awareness, understanding, and sensing of the environmental, mental, and the social dimensions of urban areas, we can more accurately design and plan for the future.
