We invite you to join the Harvard Alumni Architecture and Urban Society (HAAUS) and the Harvard University Graduate School of Design Alumni Council, for a lecture and book reading of Paradoxes of Green: Landscapes of a City-State with Gareth Doherty DDes ’10, assistant professor of landscape architecture and senior research associate. The book reading will be followed by a complimentary reception. This highly innovative book is a multidisciplinary study of green and its significance from multiple perspectives: aesthetic, architectural, environmental, political, and social. It is centered on the Kingdom of Bahrain, where green has a long and deep history of appearing cooling, productive, and prosperous-a radical contrast to the hot and hostile desert.
“Doherty’s interdisciplinary range is breathtaking-essential to any consideration of color and its impact-and his deep knowledge of the region is impressive.”
-Charles A. Riley II, Professor of English, Baruch College, City University of New York, author of Color Codes
“An utterly original, keenly observed ethnography.”
-Steven C. Caton, Khaled bin Abdullah bin Abdulrahman Al Saud Professor of Contemporary Arab Society, Harvard University
