Hazel Edwards MAUD ’89 Named Educator of the Year at 2022 Women in Architecture Design Leadership Awards
Hazel Edwards MAUD ’89 was recognized as Educator of the Year at the ninth annual Women in Architecture Design Leadership Awards in New York City. As the first woman to serve as chair of Howard University’s Department of Architecture since the program was established in 1911, Edwards has worked to increase diverse voices in the profession throughout her career. Her educational and mentoring techniques have nurtured a new generation of planning and design professionals to approach the built environment with a broad spectrum of cultural values.
“We are training people for a field that impacts so much of our lived experience, yet this is often done through limited perspectives. Architectural pedagogy has to better represent the diverse voices of those who have impacted our communities, as well as those who are affected by those places,” says Edwards. “It also has to train students to understand the history of places and the sequence of events leading to present conditions—this includes social, cultural, legal, economic, environmental issues. We should prepare our students to listen to and acknowledge the viewpoints of varied voices.” – Hazel Edwards

Gregory Haley MAUD ’98 Talks ‘Design for the People’ as part of Future of Design NYC 2019 Symposium
IABSE Future of Design NYC recently interviewed Gregory Haley MAUD ’98 as part of its 2019 Symposium, Design for the People. The Q+A was part of a series asking select designers, writers, architects, and engineers to reflect on the symposium’s 2019 theme. Haley, an Associate Principal in Urban Design at Grimshaw Architects, was interviewed with his colleague Juan Porral.
“I think for me, I would come at it with an urban design perspective,” said Haley of what the theme “design for the people” means to him. “For me, what that brings to mind immediately is public interaction. It’s about convening, design that creates opportunities for people to interact. I think that’s what cities are about, but it has to have some flexibility and choice. You can’t force that — you just have to provide those opportunities and allow people to tune their environment, to interact when they want to and in different ways and at different scales. It needs to be accessible, flexible, and comfortable.”
