David De Celis MArch ’98 Published in Peer-Review Journal, Interiority
David De Celis MArch ’98 was published in the July 2020 volume of the peer-review journal Interiority. The issue was specially dedicated to design thinking in the COVID era. Mr. De Celis’ article, “The Charms of an American Queen Anne,” explores how COVID-19 impacts the way we consider the architecture of interior space through the lens of the 1886 Queen Anne in which David and his family reside and work. The article examines how and why the Queen Anne became ubiquitous in New England and proposes that its innate flexibility may be especially helpful today.

Surfacedesign, Inc. Partners Roderick Wyllie MLA ’98 and James Lord MLA ’96 Release First Monograph “Surfacedesign: Material Landscapes”

Alexandra Barker MArch ’98 Participates in Panel Discussions with Architect Magazine, AIA New York/CRAN
Alexandra Barker MArch ’98 recently participated in a panel discussion conducted by Architect Magazine and entitled “Modern Design: Planning Secure Structures. Curating Pleasant Environments.” The panel asked: How can architects navigate demands for both new school construction and renovations while designing with the right balance of comfort, daylighting, aesthetics and security?
Additionally, on January 15, 2020, Barker will take part in the panel “Residential Architecture Now: Brooklyn,” co-hosted by AIA New York and AIA Brooklyn’s Custom Residential Architects Networks (CRAN). The group will discuss the unique experiences of practitioners who live, work, and design homes in the borough of Brooklyn, New York City.
Alexandra Barker is a founding principal of BAAO Architects, a Brooklyn-based practice focusing on residential, retail, and educational projects. The work has received national and international recognition through awards and publications. She is also the Assistant Chair and Adjunct Associate Professor with part-time tenure at Pratt Institute, where she helped to inaugurate the Masters in Architecture program in 2001 and received several grants to integrate practice and education. In addition, she teaches in the Pratt Young Scholars program which educates interested disadvantaged youth in coursework in art and design.

David De Celis MArch ’98 Selected for Mayor’s Arts Task Force, City of Cambridge
David De Celis MArch ’98, has been selected to join the newly formed Mayor’s Arts Task Force (MATF) for the City of Cambridge, MA. The group brings together artists and designers from a range of disciplines, as well as specialists in creating spaces for the arts, to help solve issues facing Cambridge’s creative community. An architect, hispanic, resident of Cambridge, and father of three, De Celis will bring his unique background and expertise to the Task Force. He is currently serving his 3rd year as Chair of the City’s Public Art Commission. The MATF will meet the 2nd Thursday of every month, from 5:30 – 7:30 pm, through June 2019.

Toni L. Griffin LF ’98 Selected as 2018 Richard Theodore Greener Academia Award Recipient
Toni L. Griffin LF ’98 has been nominated and selected by this year’s Harvard Black Graduation Committee as the Richard Theodore Greener Academia Award recipient. Toni L. Griffin is the founder of Urban Planning and Design for the American City, based in New York. Through the practice, Toni served as Project Director the long-range planning initiative of the Detroit Work Project, and in 2013 completed and released Detroit Future City, a comprehensive citywide framework plan for urban transformation. Most recent clients include working with the cities of Memphis, Milwaukee, and Pittsburgh.
The Richard Theodore Greener Academia Award is named for the first Black Harvard student to graduate (1870), this award is for a Harvard member of the faculty, administration, or staff who has demonstrated a commitment to discovering, enhancing, and promoting modern areas of study about Black people(s) that directly impact and strengthen the Black communities within the African diaspora.

Alumni Receive 2018 Graham Foundation Grants for Exhibitions, Publications, Research
Fifteen designers, artists, historians, and others from the GSD alumni community have been selected to receive 2018 Graham Foundation Grants. Announced on April 5, the Graham Foundation’s 2018 Grants to Individuals present $534,850 in new grants to support 74 projects by 111 individuals and collaborators who are “engaging original ideas that advance our understanding of the designed environment,” the Foundation writes.
Alumni projects include exhibitions, publications, and research. Among the winners are GSD faculty Zeina Koreitem MDes ’16 and John May MArch ’02, who received a grant for the exhibition “Under Present Conditions,” produced through their Los Angeles-based firm, MILLIØNS. (“Under Present Conditions” will be on view at the A+D Museum in Los Angeles from January 11 through April 26, 2019.)
The funded projects were selected from over 600 proposals and represent a diverse group of individuals and collectives, including architects, artists, choreographers, historians, and filmmakers who hail from around the world.

David De Celis MArch ’98 Begins Third Year as Chairman of City of Cambridge Public Art Commission
David De Celis MArch ’98 is celebrating his second anniversary, and beginning his third year, as Chairman of the City of Cambridge Public Art Commission (PAC). A member of the Commission since 2013, De Celis is a longtime advocate for the visual and performing arts. He founded DCM Design, a multi-disciplined design firm based in Cambridge, MA, in 1997, and recently established a new professional partnership, DCVL Design, with Amy Van Lauwe. PAC’s six member commission provides guidance and advice for the administration and implementation of the City’s Public Art/Percent-for-Art Ordinance.

Alumni Bring Solar Power to Puerto Rico; Featured in Architectural Record, Miami Herald
A team of GSD alumni are involved in Resilient Power Puerto Rico, a project launched after Hurricane Maria to bring solar generators to the most under-served areas of the island with the long-term goal of promoting solar electric energy for every household in Puerto Rico. Jonathan Marvel MArch ’86 (Project Co-founder and Director of Logistics and Installation), Walter Meyer MLAUD ’03 (Project Co-founder and Strategy Director), Jennifer Bolstad AB ’98, MLA ’02 (Project Co-founder and Director of Administration and Finances), and José Juan Terrasa-Soler MLA ’07 (Director at Marvel Architects San Juan, Puerto Rico) are members of the Resilient Power Puerto Rico team, which operates under the nonprofit Coastal Marine Resource Center. Their work has been featured in a number of news outlets, including Architectural Record, the Miami Herald, AIA blog (interview with Marvel), the Architect’s Newspaper, and the Huffington Post.
In October, Terrasa-Soler participated in the GSD event “Hurricane Maria and Puerto Rico: Lessons for Future Urban Disasters,” moderated by Jerold S. Kayden AB ’75, JD ’79, MCRP ’79, Frank Backus Williams Professor of Urban Planning and Design, and organized by the Department of Urban Planning & Design, the MDes – Risk & Resilience concentration, and the course “Land Use and Environmental Law.”

Eric Kramer MLA ’98 Named Partner at Reed Hilderbrand
Reed Hilderbrand Landscape Architecture, the firm founded by Principals Gary Hilderbrand MLA ’85 and Douglas Reed MLA ’81, has elevated Eric Kramer MLA ’98 to partner, along with three others.
Kramer joined Reed Hilderbrand in 2000, and has since worked on a variety of projects, including for the Clark Art Institute, Duke University, and the Kauffman Center for Performing Arts of Kansas City, MO. He is currently leading the firm’s design for the renewal of the plaza surrounding Boston’s City Hall at Government Center. Kramer received an ASLA Honor Award for research on urban soils, and serves on the editorial advisory board of Landscape Architecture Magazine.

Heather Woofter MArch ’98 has been named the new director of the College of Architecture and Graduate School of Architecture & Urban Design for the Sam Fox School of Design & Visual Arts at Washington University in St. Louis. Woofter currently serves as a professor at the Sam Fox School, where she has chaired the graduate architecture program since 2010. She previously taught at a number of schools, including for the Career Discovery program at the GSD.
Woofter is also the founding director and owner of Axi:Ome llc, an architecture, urbanism, landscape, and design firm based in St. Louis.

Francis Reiner MLA ’98 Named Partner at DMR Architects
Francis Reiner MLA ’98, PP, LLA, has been named a partner at DMR Architects, the 4th largest architecture firm in New Jersey. This is the first time DMR Architects has named partners in its 25-year history. Since joining in 2008, Reiner has led the firm into the dynamic area of municipal planning, designing innovative redevelopment plans for Hoboken, Hackensack, Bayonne, East Orange and elsewhere.

David De Celis MArch ’98 BAC Studio Presents Exhibition with CAC
The upper-level architecture studio class at Boston Architectural College led by David De Celis MArch ’98, in collaboration with the Cambridge Arts Council (CAC), presents an exhibition that demonstrates possibilities for how architecture can make the arts more visible, more relevant, and more accessible within urban centers. In four stages, the exhibition will evolve over the course of three months. De Celis and his students will use Gallery 344, located on the 2nd floor of the City Hall Annex (344 Broadway) in Cambridge, MA, to show their process of exploring how strategic infusions of architecture, landscape architecture, and urban design can transform a community. Juan Bautista Frigerio MAUD ’98 Designs new Buenos Aires City Hall
Juan Bautista Frigerio MAUD ’98, a partner at Foster + Partners, was the lead designer for Buenos Aires’ new City Hall. Unveiled on April 1, 2015, the building houses offices for the mayor and the city’s 1,500 employees. Spanning an entire city block in Parque Patricios, the new building contributes to the revitalization of the neighborhood and combines an environmentally efficient design with an innovative, highly flexible internal arrangement of terraced office floors. Toni L. Griffin LF ’98 Appointed Professor in Practice of Urban Planning
Toni L. Griffin LF ’98 has been appointed Professor in Practice of Urban Planning at the Harvard University Graduate School of Design, effective January 2016. Griffin will also lead a Design Lab at the Harvard GSD. She has spent the last five years as Professor of Architecture and Director of the J. Max Bond Center on Design for the Just City at the Spitzer School of Architecture at the City College of New York. She previously served as Distinguished Professor and Chair of Real Estate Law and Urban Planning at University of California, Berkeley, and Scholar in Residence for the Department of Urban Planning at Michigan State University. At the GSD, Griffin formerly served as an adjunct associate professor (2009-2011) and a design critic (2006-2009).

Karen A. Lu MArch ’98 has been honored with the national AIA Young Architects Award. She is currently employed at HGA Architects and Engineers in Minneapolis, MN. Gregory Haley MAUD ’98 has been invited to be a Design Resource for the 66th Mayors’ Institute on City Design Conference, a leadership initiative of the National Endowment for the Arts in partnership with the American Architectural Foundation and the United States Conference of Mayors with support from United Technologies, which aims to transform communities through design by preparing mayors to be the chief urban designers of their cities. Takashi Yanai MArch ’99 and Patricia Rhee MArch ’98 are both Partners at Ehrlich Architects. The firm has recently received the AIA’s highest honor, the 2015 National AIA Firm Award. Recognized for sustained design excellence, as well as exemplary firm culture, this honor will be officially bestowed at the AIA National Convention in Atlanta this May.

Alex Krieger MCP ’77 and Toni L. Griffin LF ’98 Named to United States Commission of Fine Arts
President Barack Obama announced his intent to appoint two Harvard Graduate School of Design alumni and faculty members to the United States Commission of Fine Arts: Toni L. Griffin LF ’98, professor in practice of urban planning, and Alex Krieger MCP ’77, professor in practice of urban design. The seven-member Commission of Fine Arts is an independent federal agency tasked with advising the President, Congress, and the federal and District of Columbia governments on select matters of design and aesthetics. It was established by Congress in 1910 as a permanent body to advise the federal government on matters pertaining to the arts and national symbols, and to guide the architectural development of Washington, D.C.
